Alicante Airport originally named El Altet, has been listed (since 2017) to be the fifth busiest airport in Spain. It is recognised, based on it's volume of passengers, to be THE main airport serving not only the Valencia region but Murcia too. It's location is approx 70Km north of Murcia and 160Km from the city of Valencia, whilst Elche is only a mere 10Km away.

Alicante's airport is actually situated in the municipal of ELCHE, approx 9Km southwest of Alicante, and therefore has had a historical petition from Elche to include it's city's name officially, this was implemented in July 2013.

El Altet airport opened on 4 May 1967, It took its name after the El Altet area (a part of Elche's countryside) where it was built. In early 1970s passengers' traffic reached 1 million, which prompted a construction of a new passenger terminal. In the 1990s, Alicante-Elche airport went through another renovation. New offices were constructed, and more air bridges were added.

Up until 2003, Iberia was the leading airline at the airport, however, since the low cost “DOT.COM” airlines took the lead in 2004, Easjet, Ryanair and JET2 have become well established and each reaching an exceptional amount of traffic not only in high summer season, but maintaining routes from all over Europe all year long. In 2011, Alicante-Elche airport once again went through an extensive expansion plan, and was completely reformed, in fact, a whole new terminal was constructed to accommodate the 20million+ passengers in transit to date. The new terminal, as it stands today, was officially opened on 23 March 2011. As soon as the new building opened it's doors, the previous two terminals, were completely shut down. The new terminal immediately offered five times the size of terminal 1 and terminal 2 together. It includes 96 check-in desks, 40 gates, including 15 with airbridges, and 16 baggage reclaim carousels.

The largest number of passengers to date (around 80%) are still from the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Belgium and Sweden. The most popular domestic destinations are Madrid, Palma and Barcelona.
